SS TYRELL SLOAN

TYRELL SLOAN

Now that you know my name I’m going to get right to it. I’m 18 years old, and I am the youngest of my mother’s ten kids. I was born on the Lower East Side, but raised in Brooklyn. I currently live in East New York. I like to be creative, and I play a lot of basketball; it helps take negative things off my mind. I’ve always been into construction, maybe because of the tools, but I like building things which is why I wanted to be a part of the Youth Action family and community. I joined Youth Action YouthBuild for myself, but also to help my mother. She’s been sick for a while and I want her to get better. She can’t provide a lot for us, but she has always made sure that we never went hungry. I want to show her I can be something in life, and I want to help provide for her and my siblings.

I did not make the right decisions in high school. I never showed up to school because of foolish friends. I was a follower, letting others lead me to the wrong path. I was going to be a super senior with 6-20 credits. I went to a counselor in my school and she told me about Youth Action YouthBuild, and how the program can help me have a chance in the future. I want to either work for the MTA, be a mechanic, or help build homes or skycrapers. I want to be a part of something that would help the community by fixing cars or transporting people from home to work. I’m going to do my best while I’m with Youth Action. Hopefully I can achieve my dreams and be successful. I may be the youngest of my family, but I’m going to do something with my life and make life better for family and others.
