YouthBuild Construction Skills Training

Youth Action YouthBuild Construction Skills Training track (CST) equips enrolled YouthBuild students  for entry-level roles in NYC’s Construction sector. This 162-hour foundation-training program integrates classroom and hands-on learning, supported by Operation Equivalency, an E. Harlem-based workforce-training provider.

The YAYB CST offers comprehensive education and hands-on experience in core construction and construction trade safety training. Participants gain understanding of equipment, materials, operations, and safety protocols to ensure worker and site safety, preparing them for entry-level construction careers such as basic laborer, apprentice, and site safety worker.

Key Components:

  • CPR Certification
  • CPR/First Aid/Stop the Bleed Training
  • OSHA-30 and 10 hr. Site Safety Training
  • Flaggers Training
  • 6-hr scaffold training
  • 72 hours National Consortium of Construction Education and Research (NCCER) Core Skills training and NCCER General Construction Certification
  • 120 hrs. paid internships renovating low-income housing units and participating in neighborhood service projects
  • 25 hours of work readiness training
  • Job placement support upon program completion

Support Services:

Throughout the program, Youth Action provides professional development programming, worksite coaching, case management, job placement, and educational assistance. The aim is to create pathways leading to sustainable, lifelong careers in the Construction sector with opportunities for advancement and escalating wages, regardless of participants’ educational background or entry point into the program.

Program Objectives:

Create a curriculum to meet industry credentialization needs.

Produce skilled laborers to address the worker deficit in NYC’s Construction industry.

Prepare community residents for job openings in Northern Manhattan due to emergent projects and developments.

Develop vocational and professional skills in Opportunity Youth for long-term career opportunities.

Recruit unemployed and underemployed participants, with a focus on 17- to 24-year-olds, local NYCHA housing residents, and individuals in Environmental Justice areas.

Offer paid internships to enhance skills and work experience.

Assist participants with long-term job placement, higher education enrollment, and further certification opportunities.

    Prerequisites for Application

    • Must be 17-24 years old
